Is it possible to use a router to connect and transfer data between devices?

You can transfer files between any of the devices like Android, Windows Pc..etc.
You can directly use LAN cable as well but with router you can send and receive files with all computers connected to the router.

Use ftp server, homegroup, local file sharing on windows for file transfer.

STEPS:

Connect the devices to the router through LAN/ Wi-Fi
Windows:

Using folder sharing files can be transferred between two PC's.
PC 1/ Source computer
  1. Select the folder/drive to be shared
  2. Press alt + enter for properties window
  3. Go to sharing tab and select advanced sharing
  4. Select the check box "share this folder"
  5. Press OK and close the properties window
PC 2
  1. Press win + E to open explorer
  2. Right click -> Add network location -> Next
Enter the address of PC1 in the following format
\\••••••••••••••\sharedFolderName
Examples:
\\192.168.1.156\Users
Here 192.168.1.156 is IP address of shared PC and Users is the shared folder
Find IP address:
  1. Press win+ R, type cmd & press enter
  2. Type ipconfig & press enter
  3. Find the address corresponding to the connection being used
  1. Enter username/password if prompted and select finish
  2. Now the folder in PC1 can be accessed through the router
Windows to Windows can be done without router and just with a single Ethernet cable. This is faster than the former method
Android

  1. Use Es file explorer to add LAN of PC1 in your phone
  2. Swipe from left and select LAN from network section
  3. Enter the IP address, username and password
  4. Your shared content will be available in your phone
To share content from Android to pc, select remote manager from the options and start the FTP server
You can enter the address shown on your phone in your PC (refer PC 2 instructions except address)
